Choosing the Best Online School for You!

Online schools and universities have become more and more popular. They provide the opportunity to earn a degree while working around the busy student’s schedule. This is a huge advantage when you are trying to juggle school with family, work, and other responsibilities. If you have decided to earn your degree online, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when choosing the best online school for you.

1) Determine Your Degree: Before you can choose an online school, you need to know what degree you wish to attain. Some schools offer specialized degrees; while other online schools offer general degrees. For example you can earn a criminal justice degree from many online colleges, but you can only earn a forensic degree from certain online schools. It’s vital to know what you want to achieve before you look to where you would like to attend. Keep in mind that during your search, you may change your mind and find something totally different or better than your original degree search.

2) Does the Format Fit You?: Some people think that all online schools are the same. This is like saying that all airline companies are the same. They all serve the same purpose – offering online degrees to students and getting passengers from point A to point B, but how they do that can be different.

The online school I attended did not have books. All of my courses arrived via CD from FedEx and were later offered online at the school’s website. I had to submit assignments via a secured website and correspond with my professors via email. Some of my co-workers who took online courses from other online schools were required to purchase books and had to login to testing sites to take tests and participate on the school’s Blackboard page.

It’s important to understand the format that the school provides and make sure that you are comfortable with it.

3) Cost: How much will it cost to attend the online school of your choice? This can be a very big factor for those searching for online schools. Some schools offer many degrees and have a huge student base, but are also very expensive. Other schools may not offer as many degrees, but can be much more affordable.

4) Accreditation: It’s important to avoid the “diploma mills” and attend an online school that accredited. What does being accredited mean? It means that the school has gone through great lengths to ensure that its programs meet the requirements and standards of an accreditation agency. It means that the school has made a commitment to the students to ensure that the degrees they are earning are certified and that the students have met certain requirements to earn those degrees. It means that the school is being held to a higher standard and expects that from its students. It’s safe to say that most colleges and universities are accredited, but be sure to check. You can find this out by going to the school’s website and looking in their “About Us” section. If nothing is said about accreditation, I would advise you to look somewhere else.

5) Does the Online School Meet Your Needs?: Above anything else, does the online school that you wish to attend meet all of your needs? Do you need to take just one class or several? Do you need to find a school that offers a degree in microbiology? Do you need to be able to keep costs low? Do you need to be able to login at any time instead of interacting online at certain times?

Only you know what your specific needs are and only, you will be able to determine what online school will best fit those needs.

Whether you are just out of high school and want to attend class virtually or whether you are well into your career and need more education, an online school could be for you. It’s important to understand your own situation and find the school that fits all of your needs. Once you do, you will be happily on your way to your degree!

This is an example of a good checklist to help people find online schools. Thanks!

Accreditation is #1, and then figuring out if it's a learning environment you could adapt to is good.

Many people go into online school thinking it'll be a breeze but drop out when they realize it's not so easy.

There are also many students that don't realize it's much harder to take online classes because they are not taken during a set class time.

Aside from accreditation, you should see if you have the motivation and determination to go to class. Some people like to just sleep in and miss it because they don't have to be in the actual classroom.
